Happy January!

After some marvellous singing leading up to Christmas, finishing with the Lambeth Palace Carol Service we start the new year with something slightly different. On January 20th TLS will sing once more at St George in the East for the 150th anniversary service of the Ritualism Riots. The St G website gives a detailed account of these extraordinary events (www.stgite.org.uk). The principal celebrant and preacher for this will be the Archbishop of Canterbury, so a bit of a home-from-home for TLS!

Music will include pieces by Tallis, Bairstow, Wood and Burgon as well as the very scrumptious setting of psalm 121 set by Barry Rose for the Queen's Silver Jubilee Service at St Paul's Cathedral in 1977.

Come along and hear us sing, hear the Archbishop preach and enjoy the fine hospitality of St George's congregation. Wednesday 20th January at 7.00pm. The church is a short walk form Shadwell DLR station and buses D3 and 100 pass close by.

Two down...

still a fair few to go this term!

We started with a slightly surprise evensong at Southwark Cathedral, followed a week later by evensong in St Peter's Vauxhall, a building with fabulous accoustics and one we shall be returning to I hope! Next we sing at the annual eucharist for the Friends of the Diocese in Europe, presided at by Bishop Geoffrey at the beautiful church of St Matthew in Westminster. Then Requiems for Remembrance/All Souls, services for the Lambeth Volunteers, the Society of St Wilibrord, a mass at the Anglican Communion Office and the NCIs Advent Eucharist...

Many choirs would now be thinking about Christmas, but we are far too busy for that!

the year in review

I need to make sure I keep this more up to date!

TLS have had an interesting year with some regular 'gigs' as well as some branching out into new ventures. Autumn 2008 saw us sing our now  annual 'Requiem' for Remembrance Sunday at St Mary's Twickenham and the annual service at St Matthew's Westminster for the Friends of the Diocese in Europe. November also saw the second 'premiere' of our commissioned piece 'Without Loss' with music by Brian Inglis and words written by Archbishop Rowan Williams. this was performed after evening prayer at Lambeth Palace in which we also sang Holst's beautiful eight-part setting of the Nunc Dimittis.

Advent and Christmas are always busy times of the year for anybody involved in liturgical music and TLS performed services at Lambeth Palace during the busy lead up to Christmas, offering some time of calm amid the chaos that the festive season tends to bring!

February saw a very new venture for us when we were invited to sing at the Macbeth Pub in Hoxton for one of their monthly classical-crossover nights. We sang on a stage fashioned from old beer crates and did two 'sets' one being four different versions of the Latin text 'O magnum Mysterium' (Victoria, Poulenc, Lauridsden & Inglis) and the other set including 'Without Loss' the Holst Nunc Dimittis and the Geographical Fugue for spoken chorus. We were very well received by the punters despite our 'liturgical' credentials and we hope to go back one day!

During Holy Week we sang at two events for Crown Court Church of Scotland in Covent Garden - a lunchtime concert and a Good Friday meditation. Lenten and Passiontide music is always fantastic to sing and we really enjoyed getting to grips with some lovely scrunchy harmony.

The early summer saw us jetting off to Cologne to sing for the ordination to the diaconate of Frances Hiller (alto) where we were pleased to be joined by Frances' three children to sing with us. We also sang at a Eucharist whilst there. Later in the Summer we ventured into new territory again when we visited De Lucy Primary School in Abbey Wood, south-east London, to sing for the weekly singing assembly. This was a huge success with roars of approval from the children listening and some very good questions as well. At this we premiered two new arrangements by Andrew Ibbotson - When a knight won his spurs and Swing low, sweet chariot. This was followed by a very convivial picnic in Greenwich Park.

As well as all this there has been the usual round of evensongs and Eucharists in Westminster, Lambeth and beyond - life is rarely still for TLS!

What do we sound like?

Hopefully, if I have mastered the technology properly the link below should take you to a recording of TLS recorded in the Atrium at Lambeth Palace as part of a live concert. Please forgive the sound quality in some of the louder places - we are working on this!
